Can I use an eSIM and a Physical SIM at the same time?
As a traveler, you might be asking: Can I use an eSIM and a physical SIM at the same time? The answer is yes! If your device is eSIM-compatible, unlocked and supports Dual SIM, you can use both. You’ll be able to make calls from either line, but only one can be used for mobile data at a time.

ToggleHow to switch between eSIM and SIM?
Switching between your eSIM and physical SIM is simple and can improve your connectivity while traveling. Just keep in mind that your personal carrier (not Free Roaming) may charge extra for calls or texts made abroad, so it’s a good idea to check with them beforehand to avoid unexpected fees.
To use your Free Roaming eSIM for data and your physical SIM for calls, just follow these easy steps.
For iOS Devices:
- Go to Settings → Cellular or Mobile Data → Ensure both your personal SIM and eSIM are active → Select Default Voice Line → Choose your Personal line → Return to Cellular or Mobile Data → Tap on Cellular Data and select your Free Roaming eSIM → Finally, make sure “Allow Cellular Data Switching” is turned off, so your phone doesn’t automatically switch between data lines based on signal strength.
For Android Devices:
- Go to Settings → Go to Connections → Select SIM Manager → Ensure both your personal SIM and eSIM are active → Go to Calls and confirm your personal SIM is selected → Choose Mobile Data and select your Free Roaming eSIM → Finally, make sure “Data Switching” is turned off, so your phone doesn’t automatically switch between data lines based on signal strength.
Turn Off data switch
To use both your eSIM and physical SIM at the same time, make sure the “Data Switching” or “Cellular Data Switching” feature is turned off. This prevents your phone from automatically switching between SIMs based on signal strength. Also, don’t forget to check with your personal carrier about any extra charges for making calls while abroad, they may apply roaming fees.
To keep in mind
- Free Roaming doesn’t support traditional SMS or phone calls, but it gives you mobile data so you can stay connected through apps like WhatsApp, Messenger, or FaceTime.
- If you need to make regular calls or send texts, you’ll need to use your original SIM card, just keep in mind your carrier might apply roaming charges.
- Also, make sure your physical SIM isn’t set to use mobile data, as this can interfere with your Free Roaming eSIM connection.
- And if you’re using two eSIMs at the same time, remember: only iPhone 13 and newer models support dual active eSIMs, that means, you can use two eSIMs simultaneously.
