Is my phone “unlocked” for eSIM use?

Only unlocked phones can use Free Roaming’s eSIM. Make sure your phone is unlocked before purchasing an eSIM from our store.

Here’s a detailed explanation of what it means to have an unlocked phone:

What is an “unlocked phone”?

An unlocked phone can connect to any carrier’s network, while a locked phone is restricted to one specific carrier’s network.

If your phone is locked, you won’t be able to use a new SIM card or eSIM from another provider.

How to check if your phone is unlocked

There are four main ways to verify if your device is unlocked:

  1. Place of purchase: Phones bought directly from manufacturers like Apple or Samsung are usually unlocked. However, those bought from telecom providers may be locked to that provider.
  2. Use another SIM card: Try inserting a SIM card from another carrier. If you can make calls or send messages, your phone is unlocked.
  3. Check the settings (iPhone only): Go to Settings > General > About, and look for “Carrier Lock” or “Network Provider Lock.” If it says “No SIM restrictions,” your iPhone is unlocked.
  4. Contact your provider: Your carrier can confirm the lock status of your phone and help unlock it if necessary.

My phone is unlocked, can I use Free Roaming’s eSIM?

Besides being unlocked, your phone must also be compatible with eSIM. Check our updated list of compatible devices.
